our Honors and Awards
In 1983 Barnes Nursery began its venture into the Cleveland Home and Garden Show's world of competitive gardens. For the next twenty years Barnes installed a wonderful variety of themed gardens that thrilled event visitors. Each year our work was selected for a variety of local show awards including Best of Show, First Place, Second Place, Mayor's Award, and People's Choice.
In 1992 Barnes was selected to install the competition garden for the Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association at AmeriFlora in Columbus Ohio. This international garden show was sanctioned by the International Association of Horticultural Producers and the Grand International Indoor Horticultural Exhibition. At that show the garden received the following:
- Overall 1st Prize Category
- Technical Award
- Artistic Award
- 11 First place ribbons, one 2nd place and one 3rd place for the use and function of specific plant material
- Congratulations from The Ohio Senate, John Glenn (US Senator from Ohio), George Voinovich (Ohio Governor)
Other awards received by Barnes include:
- Horticultural Society of New York, for use of plants in combinations
- Chicago Horticultural Society Medal, for an exhibit showing outstanding horticultural skill and knowledge in a nationally recognized flower show
- Western Reserve Society Award in Landscape, for the best use of roses in the landscape
- Buckley Medal of the Garden Clubs of America, for a special exhibit in the fields of horticulture, botany or conservation. Exhibit is one of exceptional educational merit which increased the knowledge and awareness of the viewing public
- Massachusetts Horticultural Society Medal, for the most distinctive garden overall
By invitation, Barnes Nursery has designed and installed widely recognized noncompetitive show garden installations at the Cleveland Botanical Garden and for the National Home and Garden Show in Cleveland.
